Allergy Sufferer? Create an Allergy-Free Sanctuary

When it comes to allergies the best thing to do is to avoid the allergens. Allergens include pollen from certain plants, dust, dander, and even mold. All of these allergens hang in the air and are inhaled into our respiratory system. Now that spring is approaching, these allergens will be in full effect. Avoiding the outdoors when pollen counts are highest, such as between 5am and 10am, will keep your allergies at bay. Some days are worse than others so you may want to check your local news station website to see if they provide a daily pollen count.

On days when pollen counts are high, it is best to stay indoors and keep all of the windows closed. With your home's air conditioner running, it will stay cool and comfortable while filtering any air that is entering your home. Because air conditioning filters the air before it is circulated throughout your home, it can catch bothersome allergens. You may also set your air conditioning system to recirculate the air to limit the amount of air that is coming from outside. If you have to leave your home, be sure to turn the air conditioning on in your car. Your car's A/C will also filter the air or even recirculate the air which will reduce your exposure to bothersome allergens.

Remember that when you go outside, allergens attach themselves to your hair, clothing, and even skin. When you get home from being outdoors it helps to take a shower to rid your body of the allergens before you hop in bed. Night after night of going to bed with these allergens can build up on your bedsheets. Regularly wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week. If you have a family pet, do not allow them lay on your bed or furniture as allergens can continue to build up there as well. When pets go outside, pollen and other allergens cling to their fur. When they come back into your home, they are bringing in a variety of allergens from outdoors.

Keeping these simple tips in mind will help you to realize how allergens enter your home. Minimizing the amount of pollen that you, your pets, and your air conditioner bring into your home will create a space that you can retreat to when pollen counts are high. Your home can become your own personal, allergy-free sanctuary!
